Synopsis

Stanley Kubrick's final film, inspired by Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novel Traumnovelle, is, like so many of the director's movies, an emotionally complex, aesthetically brilliant work. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star as a wealthy New York couple who seem to have the perfect marriage until the wife reveals a sexual temptation that leaves the husband questioning their entire relationship. His confusion and agitation sends him on a nightlife odyssey filled with unexpected dangers and revelations. "This is personal filmmaking as well as dream poetry of the kind most movie commerce has ground underfoot" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). With Todd Field, Rade Sherbedgia, Leelee Sobieski and Sydney Pollack in a masterful supporting performance. Stanley Kubrick---Great Britain/USA---1999---159 mins.

Brilliant look at salvation and the inner life of the mind. One must look at this from a psychoanalytic perspective to understand it. The movie takes place at Christmas time. Nowhere is the saving power of Christ or God found anywhere here. Instead the we find the barely subliminal world of sensuality, desire and guilt. The repressed doctor, after a rebuke by his wife flees into that dangerous world, but is never able to consumate anything. His desire is always thwarted by guilt in the form of a phone call or something else. He does not find salvation here. He does find healing at the end in open communication and recognition of our animal nature.
