Synopsis

John Waters' breakthrough commercial work is a funny, witty and extremely well-made piece of mock nostalgia, about the efforts of a politically conscious white girl to integrate a local television bandstand in 1962 Baltimore. Memorable as Divine''s final collaboration with Waters, the casting is superb and Waters has grown tremendously as a stylist, with a particularly shrewd use of color and a shock cutting style reminiscent of early Russ Meyer. With Ricki Lake, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, Pia Zadora and Ric Ocasek. John Waters---USA---1988---96 mins.

Upbeat, offbeat message film that never lets preaching get in the way of entertaining viewers. Unfortunately, may be dated. I took my teenage granddaughter to see a stage version a couple of years ago, and spent most of the evening explaining what was going on. Most of the audience was septuagenarian. The codgers got the message. They actually cheered when right triumphed. On the way out a lawyer said to me, "Those people cheered, but 50 years ago they would have been wearing white sheets". Waters won, in the long run. Trump to the contrary there may be hope for this country.
