Synopsis

The first two features from the provocative Canadian director, Atom Egoyan. Next of Kin (1984, 72 mins.): Profoundly unhappy with his family life, a young man named Peter (Patrick Tierney) undergoes video therapy with his parents. One day, while at the hospital studying the tapes, he sees the videos of an Armenian family who feel guilty about surrendering their own son, while still an infant, to a foster home. Peter decides to present himself to this family as their long lost son, to finally act out a role different from the one assigned to him in his own life. Family Viewing (1987, 86 mins.): Egoyan's second feature observes a contemporary Canadian family in the crisis mode. Van is upset when he discovers that his childhood movie memories on videotape are being erased to make room for his father''s bedroom activities. This prompts him to leave and kidnap his maternal grandmother from the old ag e home and set up housekeeping in an unused wing of a downtown hotel. A fascinating and very funny study of alienation in a high tech society. Atom Egoyan---Canada---1984/1987---158 mins.
