Synopsis

Heavily influenced by Jan Svankmajer's surrealism, American expatriate dead ringers Stephen and Timothy Quay have gone on to create some of the most astonishing and innovative works the world of animation has seen. Through their command of color, camera movement, puppetry, and the arcane, the Quays turn their miniature sets into moody, erotic, enchanting dreamscapes. This collection includes The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer (1984), This Unnameable Little Broom (Epic of Gilgamesh) (1985), Street of Crocodiles (1986), Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies (1987), Sti lle Nacht I (Dramolet) (1988), The Comb (1990), Anamorphosis (1991), Stille Nacht II (Are We Still Married?) (1992), Stille Nacht III (Tales from Vienna Woods) (1993), Stille Nacht IV (Can''t Go Wrong Without You) (1994), In Absentia (2000), and The Phantom Museum Stephen Quay/Timothy Quay---Great Britain---1979-2003---217 mins.

It is very refreshing to see material this original and imaginative! I like the "sets," camera action, how well characters mimic human behavior and emotions. How would most "name" directors stand compared to Phantom Museums if animation were a rite as "werewolf" initiation is? That said, I found the material so cerebral that entertainment value was compromised. Segments are short . . . I felt a bit dizzy. My confused position: I liked the Quay Brothers work, though did not watch the entire two disks.
