Synopsis

Based on a true story, this remarkable film from Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, The Quiet American) takes place in the unfortunate period of Australian history that found the country's indigenous Aborigine people and their culture uprooted and desiccated at the hands of the new white government. Rabbit-Proof Fence follows three Aborigine girls who escape from government captivity and travel 1500 miles on foot in order to return to their parents, using the sprawling fence built across the nation to prevent the spread of rabbits as a guide. Adapted from the book by Doris Pilkington, this touching, powerful film stars Kenneth Branagh as the government agent responsible for the relocation of the Aborigines and features a musical score by Peter Gabriel. "One of the best movies of the year" (Richard Roeper, Phillip Noyce---Australia---2002---94 mins.
