Synopsis

In what might be, in the hands of someone other than Ernest Lubitsch, a contradiction of terms--a witty, delightfully satirical comedy set in Nazi-occupied Warsaw--Jack Benny leads a troupe of ham actors in outsmarting the Gestapo and reducing them to ridiculous rubble. Benny gives an animated, beautifully-paced performance and Carole Lombard stars as his wife in her last Ernst Lubitsch---USA---1942---102 mins.

Biting satire beautifully played - probably Benny's best performance - but I had a queasy feeling throughout: a comedy about the contemporary German occupation of Warsaw directed by a German Jewish refugee and starring a Jewish actor? I don't know. I gather that To be or not to be was criticized as being in bad taste when it came out. I can see why.
