Synopsis

Joseph Strick directed this daring stream-of-consciousness adaptation of James Joyce's great novel which follows Leopold Bloom through the streets and brothels of turn-of-the-century Dublin. The film culminates in the torrentially earthy monologue of his wife Molly. The intimacy of Joyce''s language was without precedent in literature, and its flashbacks, dream episodes, sounds and visual montages translate freely into the language of the cinema. "Joyce''s great novel becomes a movie masterpiece," said Life Joseph Strick---USA---1967---124 mins.

One of my few great achievments was reading Ulysses from cover to cover. When I finished I said to myself, "They'll never make a movie out of this, it's too much in Bloom's head." I was only half right. Someone tried to film it, but not very successfully. For one thing he only skimmed over surface. More tellingly, he concentrated on outside events and fialed to convey the interior drama that makes the book memorable.
