Synopsis

The definitive film version of Tolstoy's epic novel about how Napoleon''s 1812 Russian invasion affects two upper class families. Winner of the 1968 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, it was shot over five years, with over 120,000 extras for battle scenes, nearly 300 sets, 2,000 costumes and production design and art direction culled from more than 40 Russian museums. With its budget adjusted for inflation, it remains one of the most expensive productions of all time. The film is notable for its gritty authenticity and its panoramic social and political portraits, especially the battle of Borodino. Originally released as four theatrical features in the U.S.S.R., it was cut and shown in two parts in the U.S. This is Disc One of the Ruscico edition, including Andrei Bolkonsky, parts one and two (140 minutes) Sergei Bondarchuk---USSR---1968---403 mins.
