Synopsis

Seven, The Game, Fight Club, Zodiac, and Benjamin Button--one of these things is not like the other. Director David Fincher embraces his inner Legends of the Fall fan with this sweeping historical romance coaxed from a 1921 short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Brad Pitt plays Ben Button, who is born an old man and ages backwards until his death as an infant in the arms of the woman (Cate Blanchett) who loves him. The film was nominated for 13 Oscars and won three well-earned awards for Art Direction, Makeup, and Visual Effects. Featuring Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Elias Koteas, and lensing by longtime Fincher collaborator Claudio Miranda. David Fincher---USA---2008---166 min.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button possesses something very rare in big-budget films these days: patience. Benjamin Button is lengthy and slow in the best sort of way. This can instantly turn off some viewers who are expecting a "short story," but the long journey is saturated with beautiful moments. The film is surprisingly funny and predictably sad, as the parallels between youth and old age become so numerous that you realize your own aging is not so different from Benjamin's.
