Synopsis

Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick adapts Neil Gaiman's children's novel into an altogether scarier tale about Coraline Jones, an intrepid young girl whose parents pay little attention as she investigates her spooky surroundings after a big move. Spooky as in peculiar neighbors and a secret portal into a parallel universe. Using 3-D stop-motion animation, Selick and crew have created an atmospheric, frightful story world that will stick with adults and kids alike. Featuring the vocal talents of Dakota Fanning, John Hodgman, Teri Hatcher, and Keith David. 2-DVD set. Henry Selick---USA---2009---100 mins.

Coraline was marketed everywhere to children, but parents, beware, this is not your typical kiddie movie. Coraline is actually very scary! I have a relatively high tolerance for all things spooky, but I found myself tense through most of it and gasping all over the place. For a few minutes I even had to watch through the spaces between my fingers. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of nightmares in the age 8 and under group. For older kids and adults, however, this movie is quite wonderful. With a much more complex protagonist than your average Disney princess, Coraline enthralls in an eerie world of wonder, and inspires laughter with her know-it-all attitude. The film has a very beautiful moral for parents and children alike, and strays from the typical preachy tone of similar films. Sure to be this year's winner for most popular Halloween costume, Coraline is a weird world that is worth venturing into.
