Synopsis

Guaranteed to delight children and adults, this gorgeous animated fantasy tells the coming of age tale of a young Irish monk named Brendan (Evan McGuire), who shows an interest in the art of manuscript illumination (or painting religious texts). However, his haggard uncle, the Abbott (Brendan Gleeson), has become so fixated on defending the abbey from the invading Vikings that he has abandoned their holy craft. With the arrival of an elder monk (Mick Lally) with a partial manuscript, Brendan learns about bravery in art and battle. As the boy ventures into the forest to collect materials for ink, an elfin fox-girl (Christen Mooney) helps protect him from the Norsemen and worse. With a vivid animation style that draws upon everything from the ancient Book of Kells to computer animation, it's no wonder this little Irish stunner was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Film.
