Synopsis

Michelle Williams and director Kelly Reichardt reteamed after Wendy and Lucy for this Western about a group of settlers in 1845 who wander off the Oregon Trail with dire consequences. A trio of husbands and wives (Paul Dano, Neal Huff, Will Patton, Shirley Henderson, Zoe Kazan, and Williams) follow a guide named Meek (Bruce Greenwood) who promises a shortcut through the Cascade Mountains. Instead, they get hopelessly lost, with dwindling supplies, failing wagons, and boiling tensions. They suspect Meek is a crazed man, but only in whispers. When he takes a Native American (Rod Rondeaux) hostage, Emily (Williams) musters the courage to challenge Meek before he kills their only hope of finding water. It's nail-biting Western with plenty of general appeal, but Meek's Cutoff is still a Kelly Reichardt film, with complex characters stranded in an austerely-photographed wilderness. "The first film I've seen that evokes what must have been the reality of wagon trains to the West...Meek's Cutoff is more an experience than a story" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Winner of the Producers Award at the Independent Spirit Awards and nominated for the Golden Lion at Venice.
