Synopsis

Aki Kaurismaki’s Le Havre is a charming, low-key comedy that shares its name with its setting, the port city of northwestern France. There, an old shoe shiner (Andre Wilms) tries to shield a young African immigrant (Blondin Miguel) from the police who would deport him, led by a villainous investigator (Jean-Pierre Darroussin). “Openly optimistic...What Kaurismäki has made here is a children's film…A tale of resistance for the 21st century” (Slant Magazine). Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. In French with English subtitles.

After spending time in Helsinki, and then watching Kaurismaki's LIGHTS IN THE DUSK, I was ready for another bout of Kaurismakiania. His films refresh me, stand out for their vivid characters and really dry humor. LE HAVRE is my favorite so far. Just look at the four barflies in the waterfront cafe. Look at the flashily dressed Russian who meets his end off screen. Look at the group of priests discussing doctrine while getting their shoes shined. world. Eternity in a grain of sand!

I had forgotten that the world of art, the world of film, that is, has its own rules for what constitutes a "great film". I do love well made dramas and I like foreign films for their fresh take on life and love and etc. "Le Havre" is excruciatingly amateurish, so much so that it could easily pass for an audition by local residents of some new found location for a new movie... the actors speak and move in a self conscious, wooden, completely "un stage-like" way. And by this I do not mean "natural". Quite the opposite. Pity... I was so looking forward to watching this after reading about it on this site.
