Synopsis

"Margaret" centers on a 17-year-old New York City high-school student who feels certain that she inadvertently played a role in a traffic accident that has claimed a woman's life. In her attempts to set things right she meets with opposition at every step. Torn apart with frustration, she begins emotionally brutalizing her family, her friends, her teachers, and most of all, herself. She has been confronted quite unexpectedly with a basic truth: that her youthful ideals are on a collision course against the realities and compromises of the adult world.

This was not a simple film that I could spontaneously embrace. It is a study of guilt. The main character, Lisa, (Anna Paquin) unintentionally contributes to a fatal pedestrian traffic accident. The hyper-volatile adolescent has emotionally explosive interactions with people in her life as she navigates her existence while carrying this guilt. As I stayed with this film, I found I was buying into director Kenneth Lonergan’s take on the subject of guilt in society. This film played so well to my general curiosity of the subject and more specifically to how Lisa would resolve her situation.

The movie would have been reduced by 2 hours if Lisa had been asked to tell exactly what happened in the accident. It is the most tedious movie but with the most wonderful production values. The performances by Broderick, Damon must have been contributions to a friends effort. Ruffalo did his best to make the role credible.
