Synopsis

African art, the booty of colonial wars, emerged in the West as a strange and exotic art form that would influence such modernists as Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani. But, as Kirk Varnedoe, Curator of New York's Museum of Modern Art, and Harvard Professors Henry Louis Gates and Cornel West explain, it is important to view African art within its own cultural context, as we travel to Mali to examine the art of the Bamana, Dogon and Djenne people. From the home of the famous Tyi Warra antelope carvings to the ancient walled city of Djenne, local inhabitants explain the function of art and the role of the artist in their society. "A successful and concise analysis. Fascinating viewing" (Time Out London). 47 mins.
