Synopsis

After directing almost two decades' worth of campy genre fare in the states, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven returned to the Netherlands on a serious note. Set during the Nazi occupation of Holland, this slick, complicated WWII thriller follows the struggles of Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten), the oldest daughter of a rich Jewish family. After her parents and siblings are murdered by the Nazis, she joins the Dutch resistance and is charged with infiltrating the Gestapo headquarters. To do so, she bleaches her hair, learns to carry a tune from Der Blaue Engel, and sings her way into the heart of a hunky SS officer (Sebastian Koch, The Lives of Others). Rachel has her guarde d disdain for him, he has his sneaking suspicions, but they are drawn to each other by tragic pasts and excessive lust, as Verhoeven characters are wont to do. Winner of Best International Film at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. Also known as Zwartboek. In Dutch, English, German, and Hebrew with English Paul Verhoeven---Netherlands/Germany/Great Britain/Belgium---2006---145 mins .

Hollywoodized fictional story about Dutch resistance during WW II. From the director of Robocop, Basic instinct and Total Recall. Save for a few implausible and cliché action scenes, the movie works well. The grand cinematography, superb acting and surprising story deliver a movie that is well worth watching.
