Synopsis

John McNaughton's low-budget, startlingly convincing depiction of a murderer''s life and mindset takes the subject matter of slasher films and moves it into the realm of social realism. Filmed in 1986, it took several years for this disturbing film to reach the public. When it did, it made a significant impact on American independent cinema and Hollywood productions alike. Aided by Michael Rooker''s understated and, at times, strangely sympathetic lead performance, McNaughton''s vivid, troubling film is difficult to shake. This reissue includes the director''s personal account of making the film. John McNaughton---USA---1990---98 mins.

Settings and atmosphere drip authenticity: grubby apartments, shabby clothes, beat-up rusted out clunkers are all too real. So are dregs of humanity who are the main characters. Pity. I suspect that the two male leads were so realistic in their portrayals that they were typecast as lowlife drifters. The woman who played Becky was even more unfortunate. Roles for female white trash are limited in number. Evidently she quit making films altogether. Low budget independent film delivers a lot of bang for the buck. As the tagline says, forget about Freddy et al. and dial in to real horror. I shudder to think what the full director's cut is like. Deserves favorable comparison in a sick fort of way with The honey moot killers.
