Synopsis

Monte Hellman's minimalist masterpiece is one of the truly original works of American cinema, a film virtually ignored upon its original release that has grown in critical stature over the years. Singer/songwriter James Taylor plays "The Driver" and former Beach Boy Dennis Wilson is "The Mechanic"--two young men travelling across America in a single-minded pursuit of drag race competition. In stark contrast to the almost somnambulist roles of the two pop stars, Warren Oates delivers a highly-charged and hilarious performance as the older driver who becomes their main rival on the road. Marked by an almost meditative quality, the film''s docu-drama realism gives way to a more abstract sensibility towards the end, resulting in a mysteriously resonant portrait of aimlessness. With Harry Dean Stanton and Laurie Bird. Monte Hellman---USA---1971---103 mins.

I had a friend who was into dirt track racing, so I could relate somewhat to the characters in Two lane blacktop. Film gives viewers a peak into an American subculture that may no longer exist. I wouldn't say that the protagonists are aimless, they are consumed by fast cars the way elite athletes are consumed by their sports or artists by their art. Taylor and Wilson are properly monosyllabic, and Warren Oates is a treasure. As asides, to show how technology has evolved, 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds is borderline humdrum today - my PT Cruiser 180 Turbo would give the souped up '55 Chevy a good run - and although I didn't think so at the time, the G.T.O. was a beautiful car.

This is a movie with very little snap to the story and yet a classic. I have recommended this film over and over again
