Synopsis

Spurred by memories of having his bus escorted to school by squad cars in the days of the Zodiac slayings, David Fincher methodically researched and authoritatively directed this psychodrama about the notorious, uncaught serial killer. Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Robert Graysmith, a San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist who uncovers clues about the murders that elude the police and spike the killer's interest. Based on Graysmith's own non-fiction books about the investigation, the density and talkative nature of Zodiac might disappoint those looking for another Seven or Fight Club. Still, Zodiac's formal precision puts it up there with the best historical dramas, and it''s scary to match. "The most information-packed procedural since JFK...It blew my mind" (Nathan Lee, Village Voice). Cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Chl oe Sevigny, Elias Koteas, Anthony Edwards, and Brian Cox. Shot in stark hi- def DV David Fincher---USA---2007---157 mins.

Zodiac possesses a sort of calm terror that is rarely executed effectively in psychological thrillers. While at times frantic, the film usually maintains a quiet, slow, and dark tone with moments of intensity scattered often enough to move it along and make it seem far shorter than its nearly 3-hour running time. It is very frustrating to watch at times: confusing and unclear, with loose ends and distractions everywhere. Fincher has put you in the mind of a detective, with endless possibilities and few leads that make sense. This is considerably more effective than a standard clue+clue+clue=answer format, and also well-suited to a crime that is still unsolved. Be prepared to be both dissatisfied and amazed.
